India’s overall electric vehicle penetration crossed 11% for the first time in May 2026, according to vehicle retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

FADA said a fuel-price revision during the month accelerated the shift towards alternative powertrains, with electric vehicles gaining share across key segments.

The electric two-wheeler share rose to 9.25% in May 2026, compared with 7.92% in April 2026 and 6.11% in May 2025.

Passenger vehicle EV share increased to 6.63% from 6.11% in April 2026 and 4.51% a year earlier.

Commercial vehicle EV share also improved to 2.86%, compared with 2.26% in April 2026 and 1.37% in May 2025.

Three-wheeler EV share stood at 64.45% in May 2026, up from 59.17% in April 2026 and 61.46% in May 2025.

Overall vehicle retail sales stood at 25,31,067 units in May 2026, up 9.55% year-on-year, despite heatwave conditions, fuel-price pressure and West Asia-related headwinds.

Passenger vehicle retail sales rose 23.25% year-on-year to 4,02,591 units, while two-wheeler sales increased 7.54% to 18,44,947 units.

FADA said passenger vehicles were supported by rural demand, a small-car revival, sustained SUV sales and a stronger alternative-powertrain mix.

The dealer body said the outlook for June 2026 remains measured but cautiously optimistic, supported by monsoon progress, Kharif sowing preparation and the tail end of the marriage season.
