Volkswagen, Elli to launch V2G offer in Germany

Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen Group [XETRA: VOW3] and Elli plan to launch a Vehicle-to-Grid offer for private customers in Germany from Q4 2026, according to a company press release.

Pre-registration for the offer will start in June 2026, with other European countries to follow.

The package will include an electric vehicle, app, electricity tariff, smart meter, bidirectional charger and installation.

The offer will allow customers to charge their electric vehicles and feed stored power back into the grid.

Customers will initially receive compensation for making vehicle battery capacity available for energy trading. The compensation will be based on the charging flexibility selected by the customer and will be independent of trading performance, the release said.

Market estimates cited by Volkswagen suggest savings of up to E700-E900 (US$811-US$1,042) annually in best-case scenarios.

Elli will manage the electricity tariff, charger, app control, aggregation of vehicle batteries, access to energy markets and energy trading.

The company’s energy trading team trades electricity on the EPEX Spot exchange 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The offer is based on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive platform. Around one million vehicles in Europe are already technically prepared for bidirectional charging.

Volkswagen said the upcoming ID. Software 6 will extend the functionality to additional battery sizes, including future volume models.

Elli will refer customers to a metering point operator for smart meter installation. Customers are expected to receive the smart meter within eight to ten weeks and will be able to use the V2G tariff after configuration.

Volkswagen cited studies indicating that up to E22bn (US$25.52bn) in system costs could be saved annually in Europe by 2040 through V2G and related technologies.
