ZURICH/ SWITZERLAND, 19 September 2022: ABB E-mobility, a pioneer in EV charging infrastructure, announces the expansion of its worldwide and US production presence with new manufacturing facilities in Columbia, South Carolina.
Over 100 jobs will be created as a result of the multi-million-dollar investment, which will also expand manufacture of electric vehicle chargers that are in compliance with the Buy America Act. The new plant will be able to produce up to 10,000 chargers annually, with power ratings ranging from 20kW to 180kW. These chargers are perfect for fleets, school buses, and public charging stations.
ABB E-mobility
The project expands on the existing US manufacturing facilities of ABB E-mobility, which make transit bus chargers with power outputs ranging from 150kW to 450kW. This growth will improve response to US market demand, provide a more effective localised supply chain, and shorten lead times for deliveries.
Bob Stojanovic, Vice President for ABB E-mobility in North America said, “The need for investment in the US e-mobility sector has never been greater, as 18 million EVs are expected to be on US roads by 2030. Expanding our US manufacturing operations will allow us to better serve our customers and help advance the adoption of EVs from private vehicles to public transportation and fleets.”
“Our facility in South Carolina is another example of how we are driving the American e-mobility economy forward with high-quality and reliable EV charging solutions that meet the needs of every part of a sustainable transportation ecosystem,” Bob added.
Norms & Law
The Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law both make significant expenditures in the electrification of transportation, including private automobiles, school buses, transit buses, commercial fleets, and the creation of a nationwide network of public charging stations. By 2030, half of all new US vehicle sales are expected to be electric, according to a bold goal set by the US and automakers.
With this investment, ABB E-mobility expands its capacity to support the US’s initiatives to strengthen the domestic EV charging manufacturing base. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program’s standards for EV chargers as well as those of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) proposed Buy America Act framework will be met by South Carolina-made EV chargers.
The latest in a string of substantial US-focused announcements from ABB E-mobility, with additional investments planned through 2024 and beyond, is this factory expansion. ABB E-mobility also revealed in July 2022 the opening of training facilities in Sugar Land, Texas, and Southern California, in addition to the South Carolina site.
InCharge Energy, a provider of commercial EV charging infrastructure solutions, was also bought by ABB this year, boosting latter’s portfolio of smart and connected EVs. ABB has invested in ChargeLab, a provider of EV charging software.
Investment since 2010
With plant expansions, operational enhancements, cutting-edge machinery, goods, and personnel, ABB has invested USD 14 billion in the US since 2010, making it the company’s largest market. ABB, which employs almost 20,000 people across more than 40 manufacturing and distribution facilities, is investing in fields that support employment growth, innovation, and a more sustainable and productive future.
