UNITED KINGDOM, 3 October 2022: An SSE business unit has opened its first ultra-rapid EV charging hub as part of an ambitious new initiative to build 300 hubs across the UK and Ireland by 2027.

Ultra-rapid EV charging hub debuts

The six-bay EV charging point is fueled by traceable, renewable energy and is situated on Glasgow’s Castlebank Street. The location will provide on-the-go charging for owners of electric vehicles while also giving local fleets and residents access to a dependable charging station.

The hub, which intends to accommodate household vehicles, fleet drivers, and taxis, is expected to process at least 60,000 charges annually, according to SSE Energy Solutions.

After plugging in, drivers can resume driving in 20 to 40 minutes thanks to the hub’s ultra-rapid charging capabilities of up to 150 kW.

Growing need for EV infrastructure

As part of efforts to address rising demand for EV infrastructure in response to commitments by governments and OEMs to cease production of gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines, SSE Energy Solutions intends to establish a network of EV charging stations throughout the UK and Ireland.

The UK government’s growth estimates are being outpaced by the expansion of electric vehicles, according to a recent report from the Climate Change Committee. This means that infrastructure development must speed up if the government is to reach its goal of 300,000 public charging stations by 2030.

Kevin Welstead, EV sector director, SSE Energy Solutions said, “The opening of our first ultra-rapid charging hub represents a major milestone in that journey and we’re working quickly to build a network of easy-to-reach charging points that will serve communities and businesses across the UK and Ireland.”

“Increasing the use of electric cars over petrol and diesel vehicles will play a vital role in creating greener, more sustainable cities. With this in mind, we’re future proofing our EV infrastructure by installing ultra-rapid charging points with up to 150 kilowatts of power that can accommodate larger batteries and provide reliable charging for drivers for many years to come as EV technology continues to evolve,” Welstead added.

“Providing local communities with quick and easy access to electric vehicle charge points is vital and SSE’s Castlebank charging hub will do just that,” Jenny Gilruth MSP, Minister for transport said.
