GERMANY, 1 June 2023: Vitesco Technologies and onsemi have announced a 10-year supply agreement valued at USD 1.9bn.
The agreement focuses on silicon carbide (SiC) products, supporting Vitesco Technologies’ efforts in electrification technologies. To secure access to SiC capacity, Vitesco, a prominent manufacturer of drive technologies and electrification solutions, will invest USD 250m in onsemi for new equipment.
Silicon carbide
This investment will facilitate SiC boule growth, wafer production, and epitaxy necessary for the production of SiC wafers, meeting Vitesco Technologies’ growing demand for SiC.
Additionally, onsemi, a leader in intelligent power and sensing technologies, will continue significant investments in the end-to-end SiC supply chain. The partnership between Vitesco Technologies and onsemi will extend to the development of optimized customer solutions.
onsemi EliteSiC MOSFETs
Vitesco Technologies will utilize onsemi’s highly efficient EliteSiC MOSFETs for current and future projects involving traction inverters and electric vehicle drives.
Andreas Wolf, CEO of Vitesco Technologies, emphasized the importance of securing the complete SiC value chain. He stated, “Energy-efficient silicon carbide power semiconductors are at the beginning of a big surge in demand. That is why it is imperative for us to get access to the complete SiC value chain together with onsemi. With this investment, we have a secure supply of a key technology over the next ten years and beyond.”

El-Khoury highlighted onsemi’s superior performance, quality, and supply assurance in SiC technologies, built on their extensive experience in manufacturing power semiconductor products for high-volume automotive applications.

SiC semiconductors play a pivotal role in electrification by enabling highly efficient power electronics, resulting in reduced charging times and extended range for electric vehicles. Particularly at high voltage levels like 800 V, SiC inverters outperform silicon models in terms of efficiency. As 800 V is crucial for fast and convenient high-voltage charging, the demand for SiC devices is experiencing a global upswing.
