SWITZERLAND, 20 June 2023: Garrett Motion, a leader in automotive technology, has developed a next-generation electric fuel cell compressor (FCC) for BMW Group’s second-generation hydrogen fuel cell drive train. The new compressor will be featured in a small series of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which is expected to be released later this year.
Garrett’s electric fuel cell compressor (FCC)
The FCC is a key component of the hydrogen fuel cell system, which generates electricity for the vehicle’s electric motors. The compressor supplies the fuel cell stack with the air it needs to react with hydrogen and oxygen, producing electricity. Garrett’s new compressor is more efficient and durable than previous models, and it can also recuperate waste energy from the fuel cell stack, reducing the overall energy consumption of the vehicle.
Garrett’s electric fuel cell compressors are modular and can be configured to fit a variety of vehicles, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial applications. The company’s 400-volt and 800-volt compressors feature advanced, patented oil-less foil bearings, which enable exceptional efficiency and noise performance.
The introduction of Garrett’s next-generation FCC is a significant step forward in the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The new compressor is more efficient, durable, and compact than previous models, making it a more attractive option for automakers. This is good news for the environment, as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce zero emissions.
