MUMBAI, 4 October 2023: Skoda Auto, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is making a significant move in the Indian automotive market by unveiling plans for an affordable electric vehicle (EV) priced under INR 20 lakh. This strategic initiative aligns with former’s vision for the future of electric mobility in India.

Skoda’s Early Entry into Indian EV Market

Skoda’s decision to venture into affordable EVs in India underscores the growing demand for electric vehicles in the country. Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Skoda Auto emphasized the need to introduce an entry-level battery electric vehicle. He stated, “We have to come to India with an entry-level BEV. We will now be bringing Enyaq, which is a premium car, but an entry-level BEV or a more affordable BEV than Enyaq is a necessity for us in India.”

This move aims to cater to Indian consumers’ increasing interest in electric vehicles while ensuring affordability, a critical factor in a price-sensitive market like India.

Possible Local Partnerships

Skoda is actively exploring potential partnerships with Indian brands to enhance their cost-effective EV offerings. Jahn mentioned, “For the entry-level EV’s architecture, we are exploring possibilities; it could be either MEB adjusted (modified) or it could be in cooperation with another partner.” A significant partnership with Mahindra, India’s largest SUV manufacturer, is under consideration. Volkswagen Group, Skoda’s parent company, is in discussions with Mahindra to jointly develop economical EVs for the Indian market. This collaboration could leverage Mahindra’s INGLO architecture for Skoda’s entry-level electric car.

Additionally, Skoda is looking at utilizing the new MEB21F platform developed by the Volkswagen Group. This platform is designed for cost-effectiveness, with features such as shorter wiring harnesses and efficient cooling systems, leading to reduced production costs. It can accommodate batteries with capacities exceeding 50 kWh, offering flexibility to meet various consumer preferences.

Challenges in Battery Pricing

While localizing production in India will contribute to cost reduction, Martin Jahn acknowledges that the most significant challenge lies in battery pricing. He emphasized, “The most important issue is actually the battery price, the battery cell, and the battery package. That is the factor that influences the price of the EV the most.” Skoda’s goal is to create an affordable EV that also ensures profitability in the Indian market.

Competition on the Horizon

While the exact launch date of Skoda’s affordable EV is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to arrive in the Indian market in the coming years. The Indian EV market is relatively nascent, but with the company’s entry, competition is set to intensify. Key players like Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki are also gearing up to launch multiple electric vehicles in India. This competitive landscape will undoubtedly shape the future of electric mobility in the country.

Skoda India’s ambitious plans to introduce an affordable electric car priced under INR 20 lakh are a significant step towards realizing a sustainable and electrified future in the Indian automotive market. Through potential partnerships and innovative platforms, Skoda aims to overcome challenges and deliver cost-effective EVs that cater to the diverse needs of Indian consumers. As competition heats up in the Indian EV sector, consumers can look forward to a wide range of electric options that are both eco-friendly and budget-friendly.
