KOREA, 5 January 2024: Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group have joined forces to revolutionize lifestyles, integrating the SmartThings platform into connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). This collaboration, cemented by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3, aims to merge smart home technology seamlessly with connected vehicles.

Forging a New Future: Smart Home meets Connected Cars

The joint effort will focus on intertwining Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, notably EVs, to devise groundbreaking services like “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home.” These innovations aim to offer users an interconnected experience between their residences and vehicles, including an integrated home energy management service.

Seamless Integration: Smart Home Control from Anywhere

The “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services enable bidirectional communication between smart homes and in-vehicle infotainment systems. Through the SmartThings platform, users gain remote control capabilities, allowing actions related to their vehicles from the comfort of their homes, such as starting the car, managing air conditioning, and checking charging statuses. Similarly, control of home appliances—TVs, air conditioners, and EV chargers—from within cars becomes feasible.

Elevating User Experience: Integrated Smart Environments

SmartThings empowers users to harmonize their surroundings, managing multiple devices, including vehicles, through routines like “good morning” or “arriving home.” For instance, morning alarms on Galaxy smartphones trigger automatic actions at home, adjusting curtains, lighting, and TV activation. Meanwhile, as users prepare to depart, the car adjusts to preferred temperature settings. Vital EV information, like battery status and range, is readily available on smartphone and TV screens.

Empowering Connected Journeys: Future Technological Advancements

The collaboration aims to enhance convenience across various domains through Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services. Hyundai and Kia’s Vice President, Haeyoung Kwon, emphasizes their commitment to advancing technology, enriching the journey experience for global customers.

Sustainable Energy Management for EVs

The integrated home energy management service offers insights into energy consumption across connected home devices, including EVs and chargers. Users gain the flexibility to optimize their EV charging times by leveraging energy data. EVs connected to this service can intelligently schedule optimal charging based on pricing, power demand response programs, PV, ESS data, and time-specific carbon emissions.

Evolution in Car-to-Home Services

Samsung collaborates with HARMAN, a subsidiary, to enhance Car-to-Home services. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” facilitates hardware and software upgrades, enabling users to incorporate SmartThings functionalities for diverse Car-to-Home services.
