VinFast launches new EV manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu
VinFast, a Vietnam-based electric vehicle manufacturer, opened an assembly plant at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, on 4 August 2025. The 400-acre facility manufactures the VF 6 and VF 7 premium electric SUVs. The initial capacity is 50,000 vehicles per year, which can scale up to 150,000 units as demand grows. Construction began in April 2024 and represents an investment of approximately US$500m in the first phase, part of a planned US$2bn total.
Production Capacity and Export Plans
The plant created around 3,000 to 3,500 direct jobs, with 80-90% of the workforce hired locally from Thoothukudi and surrounding areas. VinFast intends to use the Tamil Nadu site as its largest export hub serving South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The company evaluated 15 locations across six Indian states before selecting Tamil Nadu for its strong manufacturing ecosystem, infrastructure, and supply chain.
Employment and Operational Details
VinFast’s Chief Executive Officer, Pham Sanh Chau, said the facility marks a strategic milestone in the company’s commitment to expanding in India. The plant is VinFast’s first operational facility outside Vietnam and its third globally. The project aims to support the local EV component supply ecosystem and contribute to Tamil Nadu becoming an emerging automotive hub beyond Chennai.
Global Presence of VinFast
VinFast also operates two other factories in Vietnam and the United States. The company is part of the Vingroup conglomerate and pursues an integrated approach including manufacturing, sales, charging infrastructure, and after-sales services. The Tamil Nadu plant supplements VinFast’s global expansion strategy while addressing India’s growing EV market.
