AURORA, 26 October 2022: MAGNA is expanding operations in Southeast Michigan at three different sites with an investment of more than USD 500m.
As part of its expansion in St. Clair (battery enclosures), the company is opening new facilities in Shelby Township (powertrains) and Detroit (seating). These developments are in response to new business awards for these products, some of which support electrification growth.
In the state of Michigan, the new activities are projected to create more than 1,500 new jobs.
Details for the three facilities include:
- Magna Electric Vehicle Structures will expand its current factory in St. Clair by 740,000 square feet, adding 920 new jobs. A multinational automaker is now receiving steel battery enclosures from the plant, which first opened in 2021. In Q4, 2023, operations for the expansion are anticipated to begin.
- A brand-new, completely new powertrain facility in Shelby Township with 200,000 square feet of space will provide battery tray parts for an international automaker’s electric automobiles. Production is anticipated to begin in March 2023, creating more than 155 new employments.
- A new 110,000 square foot brownfield seating plant will be built near Detroit to provide seat frames, trim, and foam assembly to a US-based automaker. At maximum production, 490 jobs are anticipated.
48-Volt Hybrid Transmission System
Magna and Stellantis today began production of the company’s 48-Volt Hybrid Transmission System. A multi-program agreement has been inked between the two businesses.
Magna’s 48V 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for hybrid vehicles offers a maximum torque of 320 Nm and torque-split technology to maximise the effectiveness of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the e-motor.
At its facility in Kechnec, Slovakia, Magna produces the 48V hybrid transmission. Future Stellantis models are anticipated to use more 48V hybrid gearboxes.
