MUMBAI, 25 July 2023: MG, a popular car manufacturer, is set to bring the Baojun Yep electric SUV to the Indian market as a rebranded MG EV. Recently, SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG, filed a design patent for the Baojun Yep in India. The all-electric SUV, which shares a platform with the Comet EV, is anticipated to be available in India by 2025.

The design of the rebranded Baojun Yep for India is expected to remain mostly unchanged from the China-spec model, with the only noticeable difference being the addition of MG badges at the front and rear.

The Yep, designed as a retro-themed EV SUV, features a 3-door layout and accommodates four seats. Its design includes square LED headlights, plastic cladding on the lower half of the body, roof rails, bulky protruding wheel arches, and a straightforward rear end design. The vehicle measures 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, and 1,721mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,110mm. Compared to the Comet EV, the Yep is larger, with a longer wheelbase.

The Baojun Yep is equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle, producing 68hp and 140Nm of torque. Its top speed is limited to 100kph. A 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery provides power and has a range of up to 303km (CLTC). The India-specific model may have different specifications, as the battery pack will be locally sourced.

The arrival of the Baojun Yep in India is expected to begin after MG India’s second round of investment, which will fund the second plant in Halol, Gujarat. The launch is projected to take place in 2025, and while there may not be direct rivals at that time, the vehicle will compete with models like the Citroen eC3 in India.

The pricing and official name for the compact electric SUV in India are yet to be disclosed. However, considering MG’s ongoing efforts in localizing the Comet EV, it is expected to be reasonably priced.

The introduction of the Baojun Yep in the Indian market marks MG’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup and tapping into the growing demand for electric vehicles in the country. By leveraging their global platform and localizing production, MG aims to offer a compelling and competitive option in the fast-evolving Indian EV market.
