GERMANY, 25 July 2023: Alstom, a leading global provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, and RAILPOOL, a prominent rail vehicle leasing company in Europe, have finalized a contract for the supply of 50 Traxx Universal multi-purpose locomotives. The contract, valued at up to USD 288m (Euro 260m), aims to bolster RAILPOOL’s presence in Europe, particularly in France.
The Traxx Universal locomotives offer remarkable versatility as they can be utilized for both freight and passenger corridor services. These locomotives are ideal for effective cross-border operations due to their excellent reliability and adaptability, as well as their optimised power usage. The extended maintenance intervals further facilitate operational planning, cost reduction, and increased availability. The locomotives are set to operate in eight countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Poland.
As part of the contract, all 50 locomotives will be equipped with Alstom’s Atlas signalling system. This onboard solution, compliant with the European Train Control System (ETCS), enables seamless operations on extensive corridors, covering a wide range of countries and lines, both in ETCS and legacy systems.
Kevin Cogo, Vice-President of Rolling Stock, Locomotives & Components at Alstom DACH, expressed his delight at RAILPOOL’s decision to expand their operations with Alstom’s locomotives and advanced Atlas signalling solution. He emphasized the strong and successful partnership between the two companies and underscored their contribution to more efficient and sustainable freight and passenger transport.
Torsten Lehnert, CEO of RAILPOOL, echoed the sentiment and highlighted the significance of the purchase in enhancing their full-service offering in the French market. The locomotives ordered from Alstom will not only serve operations in France but also play a crucial role in advancing sustainable and high-performance rail transportation across the most important European corridors.
At Alstom’s Mannheim facility, engineers will be working on the locomotives, and the final assembly will be in Kassel. Other sites involved in the project include Wroclaw, Poland, where carbody shells are produced; Siegen, Germany, where bogies are produced; and Zurich, Switzerland, where project management takes place.
This strategic collaboration between Alstom and RAILPOOL represents a significant step in expanding railway operations across Europe and promoting greener and more efficient transportation. As the companies work together to enhance rail connectivity and sustainability, these new Traxx Universal locomotives will contribute to the seamless movement of passengers and freight, supporting the growth of the railway sector in Europe.
