ARIZONA, 26 July 2023: ABB E-Mobility, a global leader in fast charging technology, has achieved a significant milestone by being the first manufacturer to earn both NTEP and CTEP certifications for its DC fast chargers, specifically in the 120 kW to 180 kW range. These certifications are essential as they support a consistent user experience for electric vehicle (EV) drivers across the United States, including California, by ensuring price accuracy and transparency.
NTEP & CTEP Certifications
The NTEP and CTEP certifications involve witness testing of the chargers in approved laboratory conditions, ensuring compliance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44 (HB 44). The CTEP certification programme is overseen by the California Division of Measurement Standards, which has comparable compliance standards for chargers operating in the state.
The certified chargers encompass ABB E-Mobility’s popular Terra 124 and Terra 184 models, designed to facilitate public charging operations for both light-duty vehicles and fleets in the US Chargers that dispense energy to EVs must display critical information as part of the CTEP and NTEP programmes, including the amount of electricity delivered, the unit price, and the overall price.
ABB Terra 184 DC Fast Chargers
The Terra 184 DC fast chargers produced at ABB E-Mobility’s facility in South Carolina, which are Build America and Buy America compliant, meet the metering requirements defined by these programs. These chargers offer NEVI charging programs, hardware standards, connectivity demands, and services that guarantee 97% uptime. Installation of the Terra 184 chargers has already commenced along American highways.
In addition to obtaining the industry-first DC fast charging certifications, ABB E-Mobility has also secured CTEP certification for its Terra AC Wallbox in the 40 A and 80 A configurations, ideal for commercial and fleet applications. This certification was achieved through collaboration with software partner Chargelab to meet the software compliance requirements for the AC charging solution.
Asaf Nagler, Vice President of External Affairs for ABB E-Mobility in North America, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting market needs and providing a transparent and positive customer experience within the growing e-mobility industry. The certifications signify ABB E-Mobility’s dedication to delivering highly reliable and trustworthy charging infrastructure that caters to all EV drivers.
To support industry education, ABB E-Mobility has released a comprehensive guide to US metering certification programs, offering detailed insights into the requirements for dispensing electricity through EV charging supply equipment in different states and territories across the United States. This informative guide is accessible as part of ABB E-Mobility’s NEVI Toolkit.
With these groundbreaking certifications and ongoing efforts to improve charging infrastructure, ABB E-Mobility continues to play a pivotal role in advancing e-mobility and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles across the nation.
