North America, 23 October 2024 : Hyzon Motors, U.S.-based hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer, has made significant strides by securing North America’s first purchase agreement for hydrogen-powered refuse trucks. The agreement, with waste management pioneer GreenWaste, marks a significant shift in the waste industry towards sustainability. The deal involves 12 Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) contingent on meeting specific terms, setting the stage for a new era of environmentally friendly refuse collection.
Partnerships Driving Zero-Emission Solutions
Hyzon is collaborating with New Way Trucks, a leading refuse truck body manufacturer, to bring these hydrogen-powered vehicles to market. This partnership combines Hyzon’s expertise in fuel cell technology and New Way’s experience in refuse collection. Together, they are ensuring that the vehicles not only deliver on range and payload but also decarbonize the waste industry without compromising operational efficiency.
Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer for New Way Trucks, praised the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to work with GreenWaste and Hyzon to introduce the first commercial hydrogen-powered refuse trucks in North America. This partnership is a major step toward decarbonizing the solid waste industry.”
Future of Zero-Emission Waste Management
Deliveries of Hyzon’s refuse FCEVs to GreenWaste are expected to begin in Q4 2025. The vehicles are set to revolutionize waste management in North America, offering an environmentally responsible solution with no emissions. As more industries recognize the benefits of hydrogen-powered technology, the waste industry’s move toward zero-emission vehicles is likely just the beginning.
Hyzon and GreenWaste’s partnership underscores the growing importance of adopting sustainable technologies in industries that have traditionally been heavy polluters. With advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology and the commitment of forward-thinking companies, the goal of a zero-emission future is becoming increasingly attainable.
GreenWaste’s Sustainability Commitment
GreenWaste has a rich history of being at the forefront of sustainability in the waste industry. The company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 from its 2022 levels. Its decision to adopt hydrogen-powered trucks aligns perfectly with this goal. The hydrogen-powered refuse collection vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, significantly contributing to GreenWaste’s efforts. The company has already achieved a 36.3% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions in 2023 and continues to push forward.
GreenWaste’s CEO, Tracy Adams, highlighted the company’s pioneering role in sustainability. “Seven years ago, we introduced the world’s first full-sized electric waste collection truck. Today, we are advancing that legacy by being the first in North America to operate hydrogen-powered zero-emissions vehicles,” said Adams. This milestone represents the company’s unwavering commitment to sustainable and innovative waste management solutions.
Hyzon’s Role in Decarbonizing Heavy-Duty Industries
Hyzon is not only supplying GreenWaste with hydrogen-powered refuse trucks but also spearheading innovation in fuel cell technology. The company recently announced the Start of Production (SOP) of its 200kW Fuel Cell System, a groundbreaking advancement that will enable Hyzon to produce these systems at scale for commercial sale. This innovation is key to decarbonizing the most demanding industries, such as waste management, which require powerful, reliable vehicles.
