BRISBANE, 25 July 2023: NOVONIX Limited, a prominent battery materials and technology company, has announced the successful commissioning of its 10 tonnes per annum (TPA) cathode pilot line. The pilot line’s first product, a mid-nickel grade of single-crystal cathode material (NMC622), produced using NOVONIX’s innovative, all-dry, zero-waste synthesis technology, exhibits performance comparable to leading cathode materials from established suppliers during full-cell testing. This achievement showcases NOVONIX’s dedication to advancing battery product and processing technology.
Battery Technology Solutions by NOVONIX
NOVONIX’s Battery Technology Solutions division aims to demonstrate the manufacturability and performance of the Company’s long-life cathode materials and technology, including high-nickel (e.g., NMC811) and cobalt-free materials, in industrial format lithium-ion cells using the pilot line. The breakthrough in the all-dry, zero-waste cathode synthesis holds significant promise for the battery industry, streamlining processing complexity and reducing costs and waste, such as eliminating sodium sulfate, during cathode manufacturing.
The NMC622 cathode material serves as a platform for future expansions into high-nickel and cobalt-free chemistries, demonstrating the versatility of the NOVONIX technology across critical cathode materials. The company’s all-dry, zero-waste cathode powder exhibited similar capacity retention in battery cells compared to high-quality commercial cathode powders, with no additional finishing or surface treatments required. Early measurements of mid-nickel cathode powders produced on the 10 TPA pilot line indicate promising electrochemical performance.
These positive performance results represent a significant milestone for NOVONIX, enabling the company to scale larger test samples and initiate commercial discussions with potential partners and customers for its cathode technology.
NOVONIX’s commitment to advancing battery materials and technology, coupled with its dedication to sustainable and efficient manufacturing processes, positions the company as a key player in the rapidly expanding battery industry. The success of the zero-waste cathode pilot line brings the promise of enhanced performance and eco-friendly solutions to the forefront, driving progress in battery technology and contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
